The 2013 Maserati Kubang Concept was first introduced to the world 4 months ago at the Frankfurt Moto Show. So when the protective silk sheet was pulled back on the this Luxury SUV in Detroit this week it wasn’t a complete shock to us however it was the official North American debut. The Kubang is essentially coming home per say as if/when Maserati decides to build this truck it will have strong ties to Detroit.
This is because it will be built on the same platform as Jeep’s Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. It has also been rumored to be assembled in Detroit at Chrysler’s Jefferson North plant. However don’t think that this is just going to be a rebranded Jeep as Maserati is putting a big stamp on the sport luxury SUV. The sheet metal, engine, suspension, brakes will all be swapped out for 100% genuine Maserati/Ferrari parts which should change how the truck handles and performs in a straight line.
We were hoping Maserati would dip into the Jeep SRT8 parts bin but this could be done later on in the SUV’s life cycle to sell more models later on. Since the 2013 Kubang still has its concept SUV badge pinned on its shirt there have been no defined specs released. So what we can talk about are the rumors that are circling, they include a Ferrari sourced V8 will be used instead of the 5.7-liter V8 Hemi and the 8-speed automatic gear box is being reworked to handle the extra hp and torque.
The 2013 Maserati Kubang will have tough completion in the luxury SUV category as veterans such as the Porsche Cayenne, and BMW X5, and Range Rover Sport will not been keen to give up any of their current mark share.
The Kubang could be made official at this year’s upcoming Geneva Motor Show which is known for its luxury vehicle debuts. When it happens we will have it for you so check back in 2 months time for more Kubang news.
