With just months to go before the debut of the new BMW M3 and M4, it’s only right that we’d catch a prototype or two testing. And we have: this M4 coupe prototype was spotted testing recently at the Nurburgring.
2014 BMW M4 Spy Shot – Front 3/4
The next-gen model will ditch the natural aspiration and V-8 engine for a twin-turbo six-cylinder model (an I-6, not the rumored V-6) that will make about 450 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque — an increase of 36 horsepower and 106 pound-feet over the current engine. Total weight loss for this new model is estimated to be 220 pounds through the adoption of a carbon fiber roof, trunk, and hood. With the increase in power and decrease in weight, the M4 you see here should be able to sprint to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds, down from 4.6.

We should see the final car this fall at the Los Angeles auto show, months before a summer 2014 release.

What’s in an engine, and just about how can it positively or negatively affect the rest of a vehicle as a whole? Well if you are like me then you will share my view point that the engine is the heart and soul of a car and is a component that if not set up correctly could sour all of the other parts.
2014 BMW M3 – Inline 6 twin or tri turbo engine
So with that being said we have just received work via autoblog that there are new spy images of the next generation heart of the mighty BMW M3. It has been known for quite some time that the 2014 BMW M3 would not carry on the current car’s naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V8. Instead, BMW had to come up with something smaller and more efficient. And that likely meant forced induction.
Rumors have been swirling about what form that engine would take: Turbo V6? Turbo inline-6? Supercharged V6? Each rumor had its own reasoning behind it, but the most talked-about prediction was a straight-6 with three turbochargers providing the boost. It sounded exotic at first, but then BMW unleashed its 3.0-liter triple turbodiesel in the 550d.
That news is welcome on two fronts: it represents a return to the engine configuration that we most associate with BMW performance, and it suggests a further development of the six-pot we’ve come to love in so many of the brand’s current models. The photos confirm that the engine is likely two have turbochargers at least (there are two pipes feeding the intercooler), and they do not contravene rumors that a third, electric turbo lies just out of sight.
2014 BMW M3 – Under a protective coating of camouflage
Displacement figures for the engine still remain a bit of a mystery. It has been reported that the next M3 could be as voluminous as 3.3 liters, though it’s more likely, based on a BMW tech report claiming use of optimized, 500cc-cylinders, that the total size is 3.0 liters. In any event, everyone’s best guess about power output hovers around the 450-horsepower mark. Even the M3 has to take fuel mileage into consideration these days, so a return to a smaller-displacement engine was inevitable. Now we know how BMW intends to make sure that smaller doesn’t mean slower.
Words cannot convey how jealous I am of Patrick Long in this Porsche video. Forget the factious fact that this is his morning commute to work every day. I am incensed that the awesome Porsche GT3 RS 4.0 exists and I may never have the opportunity to drive one or even see one on the road.
I will give you the fact that the GT3 RS 4.0 is not the most beautify car that I have ever seen and sure the engine is in the wrong place and the interior has still little pull straps instead of proper door handles in a ridiculous effort to shave an additional 700 grams off of the total curb weight. However the thing that this car and all GT3’s are designed to do The GT3 RS 4.0 does better than any other Porsche GT3 that has come before it.
So just what task does the GT3 RS 4.0 set the new standard for? Simple put it is the very best road legal track car in the world! This is a car that you can drive to the track in the morning race in all day long and then enjoy the slow drive back home again in. or in the case of the first video it is the perfect car to load up on a coffee run to ensure that Hurley Haywood a Porsche racing team legend get his morning cup-of-Joe on time and piping hot.
I have also included an awesome video the one of our favorite car hosts Chris Harris produced for the Drive network’s YouTube channel last week. It pits the Porsche GT3 RS 4.0 against the BMW M3 GTS and the Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series. These are very worthy opponents and in the video Chris allows the Porsche to pick them both apart on the road and track. It is also note worthy that the Porsche featured in the video is Chris Harris’ very own which should also speak volumes to the cars awesomeness as he is someone who has driven everything and knows his stuff.
In what can only be described as a symphony of race fuel inspired noise we present two separate videos showcasing cars that are nothing more than street legal race cars. First up is the AMG division of Mercedes-Benz has attracted two million views on YouTube. To thank its fans, AMG put a C63 AMG at the top of the corkscrew at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and then drifted it all the way down.
One DTM inspired street rocket deserves another so in the second video of the day we find BMW and their all super serious M-division creation the M3. In classic BMW form they were not to be outdone by Mercedes and recruited Jordan Yost and his EAS supercharged 2011 BMW M3 to take a hot lap at the Las Vegas Speedway. The results are rather impressive and we are still combing the interweb to find out just how many horses this beats is putting down to the pavement
There are very few cars on this planet with the pedigree of the BMW M3. From the very first generation the M3 was intended to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Its mantra was to resemble a stock 3-Series coupe while providing its driver with the best handling and performing car in its class. In order to ensure that this formula could be met just about every feature that is hidden behind the cars sheet metal is subject to improvement by BMW’s M division.
This same mind set will also be the reason why the 2014 BMW M3 will be yet another ground breaking vehicle. When it does finally arrive for purchase in North American BMW dealerships, one thing is for sure it will have a brand new 6-cylinder engine under the hood. Although initial rumors pointed us in the direction of M3 being powered by a tri-turbo inline-6, we are now seeing evidence in the form of BMW patent filings that V6 is going to power the legend.
2014 BMW M3 - Speculative Rendering of the Front 3/4
I know what you’re thinking, and yes it is true; a highly advanced 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 is being developed. The new engine will not be a down sized version of the M5’s engine like the V8 found in the current M3. In that car the 4.0-liter V8 power plant was identical to the V10 found in the M5 with the exception of slicing off the 2 end cylinders. The current twin turbo honey pot that is used in the M5 is a 4.4-liter unit which would make a downsized V6 a 3.2 or round up to a 3.3-liter unit. However these figures have never surfaced in all of our research, so we are sticking with the claim that it will be a 3.0-liter twin-scroll unit.
It would be safe to say that the new V6 engine will be on par with the high revving V8 that it is set to replace and we have seen the figures of 430hp and 405 lb-ft or torque being tossed around. If these figures do prove to be correct the engine should be a beast boasting more hp and a ton more torque then the outgoing M3 power plant. Although we doubt that the V6 with its turbo mufflers on will sound as sweet as the V8, especially at 7,000 RPM. This kind of power would also seem sufficient enough to fend of the cars rivals of the Audi RS4, Mercedes C63 AMG and Lexus IS-F.

Sticking with the trend of upgrading components that the average driving will never see it is expected that the new M3 will receive light weight carbon-ceramic disc brakes and all aluminum calipers. Saving the car about 35 pounds while dramatically improving its stopping distances and reducing brake fade. Other weight saving measures would include many light weight carbon body panels, titanium mufflers and aluminum wiring instead of traditional heavier copper. Don’t tell and car enthusiasts as we are also reading that unlike the M5 the M3 could also employ electric power steering, Gasp I know. But Porsche was very successful with its new electric steering in the new 911 and the diehard Porschephile’s aren’t screaming too loud about it.
When the new M3 sedan and M4 Coupe are debuted next year we will find out just how successful BMW’s M-Division engineers were at the balancing act facing new performance cars in today’s “lower emission”, and “increased fuel economy world”. We are expecting that at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show will be when these two 3-Series halo cars are presented to the world. So circle that data on your calendar as it will also be the data when we find out if it is possible to reduce a cars CO2 emissions, reduce its thirst for fuel, and reduce its 0-100 acceleration times.
Can you see it out there on the horizon? There is a car that is quickly racing towards us. BMW may have two new M cars that are reaching their final stages of development/testing and they look like they are keeping their promise of class leading performance. Let us first explain the reason for why two cars maybe in the works as the Boys from Bavarian are creating the traditional M3 alongside a new two door version that is rumored to be called the M4. It seems that BMW is taking a page out of Audi’s book with the S4 and S5 or better yet the not for North America RS4 and RS5 muscle cars.
2014 BMW M3 - Front 3/4
The M3/M4 development teams are still holding most of their cards close to their vest however we can confirm the following. The engine has been placed on an M5 diet and will be losing 2 cylinders while gaining forced induction. We have read reports that the cars will be powered by a tri-turbo inline six engine; however we have also seen paten drawings for a twin turbo V6 power plant. Whichever six cylinder option goes into production we can confirm that it will have at least 450hp and a boat load more torque then the outgoing 418hp naturally aspirated V8 found in the current M3.
2014 BMW M3 - Rear 3/4
The cars will retain their rear wheel drive architecture and will transfer power to the pavement through a 6-speed manual or an optional 7-speed dual clutch transmission. From the spy photos it is easy to see that this M3 will visually separate its self from the redesigned 3-series through the use of flared wheel arched that will attempt to conceal larger rubber at all four corners. The M3 and M4 will also have an assortment of mild aero parts such as a new front bumper, side skirts, rear diffuser and or course quad tailpipes. It will also attempt to reduce its curb weight through the use of Aluminum parts as well as carbon fiber-reinforced plastics in such areas as the roof.
We are hoping to see the new M3 at this year’s Paris Auto Show with the M4 debuting slightly after similar to the M5 and M6 roll out. Could that debut be at the LA, Toyko or Detroit Shows? It sure could however all of these rumors are our and ours alone J You’ll have to check back in with us later to find out.
We have recently been run over online by some new spy shots of the 2014 BMW M3 as it goes through cold weather testing. Ever since the new BMW 3-Series was introduced in the fall of last year there has been a low rumbling about the new M3. Rumors have been circling for months and were confirmed by insiders yesterday at Car and Driver magazine that the somewhat thirsty 4.0-liter V8.

There will be little opposition to the statement that the outgoing M3 model was the best of the breed so far and it has left some big shoes to fill. The fire breathing high revving 4.0-liter V8 was dialed up an amazing 415hp and all of those horses could be routed through BMW technologically advanced dual cutch gear box or the tried and true 6-speed manual. The car could be purchased with carbon ceramic brakes and the steering and suspension provided the driver with the ultimate driving feel and feedback.
Car and Driver Magazine is reporting that the next M3 version will not come to market for another two years which makes sense as the 3-series just goes on sale here in Canada this month. I will include a coupe that may end up wearing an M4 badge and would also feature a convertible model that would showcase a retractable hard top. We expect liberal use of carbon-fiber components both to underscore the M3′s racing pretensions and BMW’s claim to technological leadership. Carbon fiber also will help to bring down the new 3-series’ slight weight gain.
2014 BMW M3 Sedan - Front 3/4
BMW as a brand is pushing for more fuel efficient cars and the next gen M3 will not escape that objective. Resulting in the 2014 car being rumors to either received a tri-turbo inline six or a twin-turbo V6. Either engine option will be expected to output between 450hp and 500hp that will only power the rear wheels via 6-speed manual of a 7-sped dual-clutch.
2014 BMW M3 Sedan - Side
The next M3 will compete head-on with upcoming models like the Audi RS4 and the Cadillac ATS-V, as well as the Lexus IS F and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Can the M3/M4 retain its crown of as the king of the Luxury muscle cars? Time will tell but if you look at BMW track record with the previous M#’s as well as how the cars bigger brother the M5 turned out, they could have another winner on their hands.

Because of this video I had to run out in my lunch hour to pick up a lottery ticket. For the simple fact that I couldn’t decide which of the stunning 2011 BMW M3’s, showcased in the video that I want to buy. So after I win tonight I won’t have to decide. I can simply contact Active Autowerke drive down to Miami FL and purchase them both.
Great job on the video guys as this it turned out perfectly. I can’t think of any way to make it better. Now I just have to wait for my numbers to be picked tonight in the LottoMax draw; so wish me good luck.
Without much further ado we present “Another Shade of M”.
